Who is Live Construction: Our Story and Meet Our Team

When you think about a construction company, what’s the first thing that comes to your mind? Maybe you get scared about having the stress of dealing with a group of burly men with tool belts, hard hats, and power tools. Maybe you think about the mess, noise, and stress working with the builder that will come along with your next home renovation or construction project.

At Live Construction, we want to change your perception of what it means to work with a construction company. In this article, we’ll share our story, how we got started and what were our moments of turnarounds in business. We will also introduce you to our amazing team of skilled contractors and how their incredible work makes us different from other builders.

Who is Live Construction?

Live Construction is a family-owned and operated business that has been proudly serving in Townsville for over 12 years. We’re a team of skilled contractors who take pride in our work and are dedicated to transforming your home into your dream living space. 

Our Story: How we started

The motivation for launching Live Construction was that we had seen families being misled, not receiving what they paid for, and obtaining poor service for too long.

So in 2010, Live Construction was formed to fill a gap in the market and commence a building company with ethics, values, and strong personal relationship with our clients.

Our success in the market began with our first customers, Brett and Sue-Ellen, who had a young family and required extra space to grow.

This first project was a huge remodel and extension overlooking Strand Park in Townsville. It was a wonderful beginning to our construction journey, and they’re still enjoying their beautiful home to this day.

Challenges we faced in

With the amazing start, we quickly gained a reputation for quality work and service and our business began to grow. However, our Director, Darrell Gribble was doing all of our estimating, contract administration, site supervision, and project management to maintain the high standards that we had set.

This soon became a huge challenge as the business grew, Darrell hit burnout. The business was doing well, but he needed to find a way to continue scaling the operations while maintaining our high standards.

Moments of Turnaround

When things started breaking down, Darrell turned to mentors and other business owners for advice. He soon learned that it was essential to systematise our processes and to put in place procedures that could be managed by a great team of people.

We also invested in technology and software that would help us with our estimating, communication, construction, job costing, and estimating. We also set up a project management system that provides our clients 24/7 access to where things such as their project progress and budget are, right at their fingertips.

Now we have a great team of people who operate the business with our values, quality work, and high standards. Darrell is still very much involved in the business but now able to take a step back from time to time and enjoy more time with my family.

Meet Our Team at Live

Darrell Gribble – Managing Director

Darrell is a natural leader with a true passion for not only maintaining but cherishing the relationships he has formed with his fellow employees and clients over the years. Darrell always knew he wanted to be in the construction industry, with his first job being a labourer for a local builder during his high school years. From there, Darrell completed his Carpenter and Joiner apprenticeship in 1988, and became a QBCC licensee in 1993, and has never looked back.

Darrell is a family man who loves to spend time with his wife Karen and three adult children, likes to keep fit, and enjoys a cold beer after mowing the lawn on a hot summer’s day.

Tom Toomey – Site Manager

Tom has worked with Darrell and a number of other local builders after completing his apprenticeship as a Carpenter and Joiner, in 1993 and obtaining his QBCC licence number in 2007. Tom excels in coordinating and organising everyone and everything on the job site – from our own carpenters work schedules to other trades subcontractor partners, to ensure the project stays on schedule. Tom’s extensive experience in the building industry has fueled his keen eye for detail, strong work ethic and exceptional communication skills which aid in the perfecting of our luxury custom homes.

Tom has a passion for motorsports and loves to go camping and fishing whenever the opportunity arises.

David Lazzaroni – Operations Manager

David has been working in the residential building industry since 1990 participating in various roles such as project estimating and contract administration for builders throughout Townsville. David has worked with Darrell previously in 2005. In 2007, David began his work in the commercial building industry, taking on roles such as commercial manager and contract manager on massive projects, such as hospitals and defence facilities. David has spent the last 15 years working on large-scale commercial projects so he is keen for a change of scenery by working with us at Live Construction to produce our luxury custom homes.

In his spare time, David loves to spend time entertaining friends and family by cooking and sharing meals together. David also likes to partake in target shooting with his two sons.

Daniel Felix – Carpenter

In his early years of working in the building industry, Daniel began his career as a labourer for a local builder which encouraged him to pursue his apprenticeship in Carpentry, which he later completed in 2007. Daniel had previously worked with Tom Toomey (our site manager) over the years so working with him again, at Live, proved to be a smooth transition. Daniel’s valuable experience has crafted him into an incredibly hard worker, who excels in practicality and efficiency on the job site.

On the weekends, Daniel loves to spend time with his wife and two young kids while kicking the soccer ball around and cheering on the sidelines whenever they compete. Daniel himself also takes part in first-grade football.

David Beresford – Carpenter

David has an array of experience within the residential and commercial building industry being a third-generation Carpenter, after completing his Carpentry apprenticeship in 2019. However, his ambition doesn’t stop there. David is currently undertaking his Certificate IV in Building and Construction via Master Builders Queensland and is keen to expand his knowledge and have even more skills to draw on. David has also worked with Tom on and off throughout the years and is an invaluable worker, who always ensures you’re greeted with a smile.

In his spare time, David has a passion for athletics, specifically sprinting, and loves spending time outdoors taking part in target shooting and spearfishing.

Toni Santarossa – Contract Administrator

Toni began her career at Live Construction in late 2019 doing data entry and general administration. After always having an interest in building and design, the opportunity to get her foot in the door of a construction company was an offer she couldn’t refuse. Throughout her years at Live Construction, Toni has gained more insight into the building industry and has completed Contract Administration and Residential Building Contract Courses through Master Builders Queensland. She is currently undertaking her Certificate IV in Building and Construction with David.

Toni enjoys fine food with a cheeky glass of red wine and on Tuesday nights, she also enjoys partaking in pottery classes.

Abby Collison – Administration

Abby is one of the newest members of the Live Construction team and has maintained a passion for design since childhood. After completing her school-based Certificate III in Business, Abby was keen to step into an administrative role after completing high school in 2021. Following through with her passion, Abby will complete her Interior Design Course through The Interior Design Institute this year.

On the weekends, Abby loves to have a quiet night with her Maltese-Shih Tzu, Ruby, and enjoys eating out at restaurants.
